Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between personalized signs and custom signs?

personalized product allows you to submit your desired text to be integrated with an existing design. Some personalized products may also give a choice of fonts or other small design modifications. Any other product configuration such as finish and mounting options will be selectable on the product page if applicable.

custom product allows you to submit your appropriate logo/design files with your order. We will create a custom design based on your chosen sign dimensions and artwork and email a proof for your review before proceeding.

What do I need to provide when ordering a personalized metal sign?

After choosing standard options such as size, finish, etc., you will need to provide the text for your personalized sign. This could includes names, dates, or other text. Enter your text and any other instructions into the notes field before adding to cart. Not all text will work for all designs, but please contact us if you have any questions and we'll be happy to see if we can accommodate your request. We will provide a proof for you to review and approve before cutting.

What do I need to provide when ordering a custom metal sign?

After choosing standard options such as size, finish, etc., you will need to provide a suitable file of your logo or design. Suitable file types include most vector formats such as Adobe Illustrator (.ai), Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg), and Encapsulated PostScript (.eps). PDFs can also contain vector graphics, like those exported from Canva (canva.com) and other software. 2d DXF (.dxf) files exported from CAD software are also acceptable. Note: simply converting a file from a bitmap image to a vector format will not result in a useable file. See more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics

I’m working with a professional graphic designer or am one myself, what do they or I need to know?

In addition to the notes above, there are many ways that a graphic designer can make ordering a custom sign easier. Following are a some recommendations:

  • Keep designs simple and connected. Floating sections are not possible and will have to be stenciled in with enough material to support the size of the inner area. Small detail may be lost in the cutting or cleaning processes and should be avoided. Narrow script fonts can also be a problem, and most fonts will need to be stenciled. Try to avoid long cuts reaching almost to the edges of a sign that may not leave enough material to support the weight of the rest of the design.
  • Before exporting, simplify, combine, or merge your vector design down to a single path. Ensure that there are no intersecting or overlapping areas. Also look for areas that may contain gaps only visible at high zoom levels, these will need to be combined or our machine will attempt to cut them. It is often useful to scan the nodes in a path to confirm that everything is cleanly constructed. Convert all text, smart objects, etc. to curves, and expand any stroke width leaving only a solid fill over a transparent background.
  • Export in a neutral format such as SVG or EPS.
